Allergy Testing

Skin Prick Testing

A safe, rapid allergy test performed in clinic to identify specific food and environmental allergens that may be affecting your child.

Duration 20 min
Results Same day
Age Range Any age

Skin prick testing (SPT) is a quick, well-established test for identifying IgE-mediated allergic sensitisation. A small drop of allergen extract is placed on the forearm and a lancet is used to create a tiny scratch beneath the drop. After 10-15 minutes, any resulting weal (raised bump) indicates a sensitisation.

SPT is performed under Dr Sood's direct supervision, with emergency anaphylaxis medication immediately available.

What allergens can be tested

  • Foods: e.g. peanut, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, sesame, fish, shellfish, several fresh foods
  • Environmental: house dust mite, grass pollen, tree pollen, pet dander, mould

Preparing for the test

Antihistamines (including cetirizine, loratadine, chlorphenamine) must be stopped at least 3–5 days before testing. Topical steroid creams should not be applied to the test area on the day.

Frequently asked questions

The lancet used creates only a very small scratch on the surface of the skin. Most children describe it as feeling like a light tap. Antihistamines must be stopped 3–5 days before testing.

Results are read after 10-15 minutes and discussed with you in the same appointment.
