Milk OIT

A structured oral immunotherapy programme for children with persistent IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy who have not outgrown their allergy through dietary avoidance alone.

Duration 9–18 months
Age Range 4–18 yrs
Method Daily dosing

Milk OIT uses measured daily doses of cow's milk protein to desensitise children who have not outgrown their IgE-mediated allergy. It is particularly beneficial for children aged 4 years and over whose allergy has persisted despite a dairy-free diet.

The programme begins with an eligibility assessment including up-to-date allergy testing. If appropriate, milk doses are started at a very small amount in clinic, then continued at home with regular review appointments.

Suitable candidates

  • Children aged 4–18 with confirmed IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy
  • Those who have not outgrown allergy despite avoidance
  • Those who are affected significantly by accidental milk exposures
  • Those whose families wish to reduce risk and improve dietary freedom

Frequently asked questions

A baked milk ladder introduces milk in increasingly less-processed forms and relies on natural tolerance development. OIT uses precise daily doses of liquid or powdered milk protein, controlled by Dr Sood, to actively train the immune system. It is appropriate for children who have failed the ladder or who remain highly reactive.

No. OIT targets IgE-mediated allergy. Children with non-IgE cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) follow a different dietary pathway and are not candidates for OIT.
