Egg OIT
An oral immunotherapy programme for children with persistent IgE-mediated egg allergy, helping them tolerate egg protein and reducing the risk of severe reactions from accidental exposures.
Many children who were allergic to egg as toddlers outgrow their allergy naturally. For those who do not, egg OIT offers an active route to desensitisation. The programme uses measured daily doses of egg white protein, increasing gradually from a very small starting amount.
The programme targets the more reactive forms of egg protein that cause reactions to lightly cooked or raw egg.
Programme overview
- Eligibility review: allergy testing and clinical history
- Starting dose in clinic (supervised)
- Daily home dosing: precise measured amounts of egg white powder
- Dose increases at regular clinic visits
- Maintenance and dietary review
If your child is having a severe allergic reaction, call 999 immediately or go to your nearest A&E. Do not wait. Always carry prescribed emergency medication as directed by your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Many children with egg allergy tolerate extensively baked egg but still react to lightly cooked or raw egg. Egg OIT can progress desensitisation beyond what the baked egg ladder achieves.
The goal of OIT is desensitisation to reduce reaction risk from accidental exposure, not to guarantee unrestricted egg eating. Many children do achieve significant dietary freedom; Dr Sood will discuss realistic expectations at the assessment.
